How to Prepare Your Skin for Waxing
Going in for a waxing procedure can be intimidating if you don’t know how to prep. Before your waxing appointment, prepare your skin so the procedure goes smoothly and without irritation. Some preparations need to be made days or even weeks before the appointment.
1. Let your hair grow!
Don’t book a waxing appointment until you haven’t waxed or shaved for at least two to three weeks. Ideally, you should have enough hair growth for the wax to be able to grip the hair. If the hair is too short waxing will not work effectively. Waxing will be more effective if you wait 4 to 5 weeks, long enough for the hair to be waxed. The exception to this is fine hair. Fine hair can be shorter, but try to grow it out for several weeks beforehand. If you have shaved the area only days before wanting to be waxed, you will have to wait before we can wax you.
2. Timing is everything!
Avoid waxing only a day or two before a special event or vacation. Skin reacts differently to waxing, especially the first time. Your skin may experience redness, bruising, or irritation. Try waxing for the first time weeks before a special event so you know what to expect.
3. Is your skin ready?
Check for irritation, sunburn, dermatitis, psoriasis, or breakouts. Treat any rashes or sunburns before your appointment to avoid tearing skin while being waxed. Look for any cuts or bruises as well: even small shaving cut can develop irritation when waxed.
4. Stay out of the sun
Abstain from tanning one week before your appointment. Time spent out in the sun will make your skin sensitive. Even if you don’t get a sunburn, skin is more irritability-prone right after a tan. Avoid spending extended amounts of time outside for several days before your appointment. If you need to spend time outside, wear SPF 50+ sunscreen and re-apply every few hours.
5. Exfoliate your skin
Starting 2 days before your appointment, exfoliate in the shower to remove dead skin and lift trapped hair. Exfoliating will reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs after the appointment. Using a loofah or washcloth, rub an exfoliating cream in circular motions around the area you want waxed. Rub softly. Pressing too hard can irritate your skin. However, don’t exfoliate your legs the same day you plan to wax them. Exfoliate several days before to prevent itching and redness.
6. Moisturise your skin
After you exfoliate, apply a moisturiser to your skin. This will hydrate your skin and keep it soft until the day of the appointment. Exfoliation can leave your skin dry, so always moisturise afterwards. However, on the day of your appointment do not apply any moisturiser or deodorants to your body as we need your skin clear of all oils that could prevent the wax from adhering to the hair.
7. Hydrate your skin
On the day of your appointment, soak your skin in a warm bath or take a longer shower to hydrate your skin. Dry skin is painful to wax because the hairs are harder to remove.
Drink plenty of water before your appointment to reduce rash development after waxing.
8. To help with any pain
If you’re sensitive to pain, take a couple of panadol (not asprin or ibuprofen which thins the blood) before your appointment to reduce pain and inflammation. Take the pain relief pill an hour before your appointment so it kicks in when you need it and lasts throughout the appointment.
9. What to wear
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to the appointment. Don’t wear skinny jeans or tight fabrics to your appointment, especially if you want your legs waxed. After your skin has been waxed, you’ll want soft and comfortable clothing. Wear soft, loose clothing to avoid irritating your skin after the appointment.
10. Consultation
When you phone us for the first time, we’ll go over a few important things with you to make sure you have read our website and understand the procedure and what to expect. When you arrive a form will be given to you to fill in that will go over your skin type, any conditions you may have and any medications you maybe taking that could become problematic if waxing is undertaken. Once you have done this once, we’ll keep it on file so your next appointment will be quicker.
